 Stanway 2 – 4 Chelmsford City

CITY made the short trip up the A12 to Colchester on Sunday to play top of the table Stanway.

The visitors put Stanway under pressure for the first five minutes but the home side caught them on the break to open the scoring.

Two minutes later, a long ball forward from the halfway line got carried by the wind and deceived City goalkeeper Carly Waters.

City made a couple of changes at half time and started the second half brightly.

Emma Ridings broke through and after rounding the goalkeeper she slotted the ball into the net to make it 2-1.

City went close to equalising following a great run by Angela McPhee. Her cross was met by Sarah Jolly whose shot grazed the top of the crossbar.

City drew level when Jolly passed to Ridings, who showed great composure to shoot the ball into the net.

Sharon Brownlie then produced a wonderful pass from midfield to Lisa Nepean, who got in front of the last defender but her shot was just wide.

Nepean soon made up for this. Following good work by Ridings who saw her shot across the goal half saved, Nepean was on hand to put City ahead.

City sealed the win when Angela McPhee netted with a powerful shot.

The win leaves City fourth in the table with three games left and are in with a chance of gaining a place in the play off’s for a place in the premier division next season.

This Sunday, City host Hethersett Athletic at Barnston AFC, High Easter Road, Barnston. (Kick off 2pm)
