Chelmsford City 3 – 5 Stanway
DESPITE a battling display against top-of-the-table Stanway, City slipped to their first defeat of 2006 as the visitors fought back from 3 – 1 down to claim a 5 – 3 victory.
City took the lead when Lucy Garrett threaded a wonderful ball through for Sarah Jolly, who timed her run well and slotted past the keeper. Chelmsford’s lead was doubled 10 minutes later as Amy Vernon burst through from defence before skipping past two players and knocking the ball over the oncoming goalkeeper to mark her first senior goal in City colours.
On 30 minutes City well and truly stamped their authority on the game, with Lucy Garrett once again delivering an inch perfect ball into the box, where Laura Brown was on hand to stab home City’s third. Stanway kept in the game just before the break when their imposing striker, Louise Gaskin, found a way through the defence and sent the ball curling past the outstretched arm of Carly Waters.
Minutes into the second half, Stanway were awarded an indirect free kick in the area, and after a good delivery into the box, the impressive, Debbie Green headed in a fine goal.
Ten minutes later and the Stanway comeback was complete as they equalised, and then took a 4 – 3 lead. Chelmsford threw everything at their opponents in the closing stages, with some brave challenges being put in at both ends.
The away team netted once more towards the end to secure a thrilling 5 – 3 win after a wonderful game of football.
