Essex County Women’s Cup

 First Round

After Extra Time

 Sunday 16th October 2005

 Redbridge 4 – 5 Chelmsford City

In an incredible nine-goal thriller at the London Marathon Playing Fields on Sunday, City snatched victory in the closing minutes of extra time to secure a place in the second round.

City put on a poor first-half performance, with each side getting two goals to make the game level at the break, City’s goals being scored by Emma Ridings and Sarah Jolly.

Redbridge made a rousing start to the second half, bursting through the Chelmsford defence to claim their third goal on 50 minutes.

This inspired City to raise their game, and Laura Brown converted a pass from Jolly to put the visitors back on level terms.

With 10 minutes left City defender Elizabeth Marshall appeared to be pushed over on the edge of the area; however the referee deemed there had not been a foul and waved play on.

Redbridge then scored what looked to be the winning goal, but, on 89 minutes, Ridings scored again to send the tie into extra time.

Redbridge had a player sent off in the first 15 minutes of added time after she handled the ball on the goal-line to deny a goalscoring opportunity, although City failed to convert the resultant penalty.

With just a minute left until the shoot out, City pushed forward one last time and Ridings rounded two players before hitting home the winning goal.

City will now entertain Colchester United in the next round while this Sunday, they are in FA Cup action, at South East Combination side Dagenham & Redbridge.
