CHELMSFORD CITY 5 ARLESEY TOWN
0
Sunday 4th
May at Marconi Leisure,
West Hanningfield Road
CHAMPIONS,
after a long hard season, Chelmsford City eventually made sure
of the title following Sunday’s superb win against an Arlesey
Town side who were still in the hunt for runners-up spot.
City
enjoyed the better of the opening period, Lucy Garrett going
closest with a well struck free kick which was well saved by
the Arlesey keeper. The visitors settled and began to enjoy a
spell of possession but could not find a way through as both
sides cancelled each other out.
With 35 minutes gone, City edged in front from
the penalty spot after Laura Brown was felled in the box
following a clumsy tackle from behind. Up stepped
Michelle Davis to coolly stroke the ball home
despite the efforts of the keeper.
The second half saw City, not content with
sitting on their single goal lead, put early pressure on the
Town goal but it was not for a quarter of an hour before any
tension City had eased with a second goal. Good work on the
right by Emma Ridings culminated in her squaring the ball
across the face of goal where Jasmine Wheeler
netted at the far post.
Davis
was influential in the centre of midfield all afternoon and
showed her skill and determination by netting City’s third
with a well taken goal as the ‘Clarets’ dazzled the sizeable
crowd with intricate, one touch passing football which opened
up a tiring Arlesey defence.
To their credit, Arlesey always looked
dangerous on the break but City’s back four of Liz Marshall,
Zoe Taylor, Amy Vernon and Laura Kendle looked strong
throughout and when they did get a chance on goal, keeper
Leanne Topper showed why she is rated as one of the top
keepers with a confident display. Firstly she had to back
track and claim an attempted lob under her own crossbar and
then hold onto a fiercely struck shot.
City skipper
Ridings rounded off an inspirational performance
when her determination in closing down every ball saw her
capitalise on an attempted clearance which rebounded kindly
and she stroked the ball home for City’s 4th.
Topper had to be at her best to get down and
turn a low drive round her post while moments later at the
other end, a moment of sheer brilliance by
Davis saw her complete her hat-trick. Finding
herself in the box, with her back to goal and surrounded by
defenders, she cheekily back heeled the ball
‘Christiano Ronaldo’ style past the bamboozled Town
keeper into the net.
The remainder of the match was played out with
City putting on a show of skill and great one
touch football in front of an already celebrating crowd, the
final whistle sounding prompted scenes of celebration with
champagne corks popping.
Chelmsford City Ladies final match of the
season will be this Sunday 11th May at Marconi
Leisure, West Hanningfield Road, Great Baddow kick off 2pm.
With Barton Rovers pitch not being available they have agreed

County Cup Final
Chelmsford City v Colchester United 2 - 2 (After Extra Time)
Colchester United won 4-3 on penalties
City started
the game as the underdogs and early chances from Colchester had
the crowd on the edge of their seats. Colchester dominated a
spell at the start and City's keeper Leanne Topper pulled of
some high quality saves to deny Colchester an early lead. City
began to find their feet and the defence of Amy Vernon, Zoe
Taylor, Laura Kendle and City's player of the match Kerri Binks
all working and battling to keep Colchester at bay. Colchester
made a fast attack and City defended well. A free kick was
awarded for a good challenge and the crowd showed their
disapproval. Colchester made use of this earning a very well
taken corner which lead to a goal. City kept their heads up and
spurred on by the crowd Striker Emma Ridings made a great run
weaving around the opposition and crossed the ball onto her
partner up front Laura Brown to score a great tap in. The crowd
fired up by Alan Harding went wild, Claret the Parrot City's
mascot for the day joined in with the City bench celebration's.
Half time 1-1. City left the pitch to a rightly deserved
standing ovation.
The second half started with both teams battling hard and
throwing everything at the ball. Colchester dominated most of
the half and City's midfield of Michelle Davis, Sharon Brownlie,
Emma Wells, and Jasmine Wheeler worked tirelessly to hold on to
the ball. City's Binks made a very well timed tackle and a
bizarre free kick decision went to Colchester and again the
crowd vented their disapproval. Colchester capitalised and
scored. City's Binks took a free which soared over the bar. A
short time later another Binks free kick rattled the bar. Helen
Alder, Lucy Garrett and Natalie Madlin provide fresh legs and
gave a much need rest to the hard working Kendle, Brownlie and
Brown. With less then two minutes on the clock the whole stadium
had their hearts in their mouths as a free kick was awarded to
City which was, up stepped Binks who's 28 yard free kick
rocketed into the goals top right hand corner and set the
stadium alight. A fantastic return for Binks. The whistle went
for extra time.
In extra time both teams threw everything they could at each
other trying not to make a mistake. This took the game to
penalties which was a disappointing way to end arguably the best
cup final for a long-time.
City were unfortunate to miss two penalties. Final result 3-4.
Manager Clare Andrews: we came here as the underdogs and we left
as heroes with our heads held high. I am proud of every player
on our team which also include Liz Marshall, Sarah Jolly and

Stevenage Borough v Chelmsford City 2 - 0
Chelmsford City’s 5 month unbeaten
league run came to end this weekend with a disappointing
performance against promotion rivals Stevenage Borough. A
serious injury to centre back Laura Kendle and the
unavailability of Liz Marshall saw the clarets having to put out
a reshuffled squad to face a focused Stevenage side.
Stevenage had so far been the only
team to beat the clarets this season and they looked determined
to claim all six points from the start with early pressure on
the ball. With the hail and blustery conditions Chelmsford
struggled to get any rhythm going but it was the clarets that
had the first real chance with an effort from
Laura Brown which was
saved by the goal keeper. That was about as close as Chelmsford
came to finding the back of the net in the first half and it
wasn’t long before their make shift defense was coming under
pressure. Confusion between a Chelmsford defender and goal
keeper Leanne Topper
saw the ball break lose for a Stevenage player who calmly
slotted the ball home for their first. It was again confusion at
the back which gifted Stevenage their second goal which came
from a cruel deflection off a Chelmsford player.
The second half saw the weather
calm down but the game was still as scrappy as ever with both
teams finding it difficult to play any quality football. A
tactical change at the back saw Captain
Emma Ridings back in
her forward role and this paid off with an early shot on goal
which went just wide. This was again Chelmsford ’s only real
chance of scoring with all other efforts way off target. Two
further substitutions failed to lift the away side and
Chelmsford made the trip home empty handed.
The clarets must now pick
themselves up as they face Colchester United this coming Sunday
in the Essex Women’s County Cup Final at Maldon Town.
Chelmsford City V Brentwood Town 4 - 0
Chelmsford city Ladies extended
their lead at the top of the league to 13 points this weekend
with a comprehensive win over local rivals Brentwood Town . With
the clarets being made to share the points in the away fixture
this promised to be an exciting game and it was the home team
who started brightest.
An early ball out from goal keeper
Leanne Topper
found Emma Wells
on the left wing who played a through ball to
Emma Ridings who saw
her shot go just wide of the post. The clarets didn’t have to
wait too long for another chance on goal but again they were
denied when Laura Brown
saw her shot go wide. As Chelmsford began to settle down
Brentwood fought hard to pressure the ball and their hard work
was rewarded with a corner kick. A good ball delivered by Kerry
Mills caught the wind and looked to be heading for goal but the
away team were denied by a Chelmsford player who cleared the
ball from the back post. With an early scare Chelmsford began to
pick up the pace and a well worked counter attack saw
Laura Brown coolly
head the ball over the advancing goal keeper for the home teams
first goal of the day. Any early nerves were now well and truly
settled and with that the clarets began to play the fluid
flowing football they are renowned for. Another counter attack
saw the move of the game with Wells delivering an early cross to
the oncoming Wheeler
who saw her volley strike the underside of the crossbar but
was unlucky to see the ball bounce away from the goal. A Wells
shot and a Chelmsford free kick all failed to find the back of
the net but the ladies didn’t have to wait too long for their
second goal when they were awarded their first corner of the
game. Right back Zoe Taylor
delivered a superb ball into the box which could only be palmed
into the net by Brentwood’s goal keeper to give Chelmsford goal
number two.
The second half saw Chelmsford
come out of the blocks with added confidence and this was
displayed by a number of early opportunities from
Brown,
Wells and
Ridings. With the
wind behind them the home team were now firmly on top and this
was cemented by a move began by Helen Alder who played a through
ball to Wells who
nipped in between two defenders and chipped the ball over the
oncoming keeper for Chelmsford ’s third. As the minutes began to
tick down player of the match
Laura Brown was
replaced by defender Liz
Marshall and the hardworking
Jasmine Wheeler was
replaced by Lucy Garret.
With limited minutes remaining Chelmsford were still fixed on
scoring more goals and the now sole striker
Emma Ridings had to
do all of the hard work herself as she picked the ball up on the
edge of the box, cut inside a defender and calmly placed the
ball into the bottom left hand corner for the fourth and final
goal of the game.
An outstanding team performance
from Chelmsford now see’s them go into next weeks away tie at
Stevenage with the league title set firmly in their sights as
they look to win promotion to the Premier Division of the
Eastern Region league.

Semi Final
Chelmsford City
v Sawbridgeworth Town 6 - 0
Chelmsford City Ladies took a
while to get into their stride as they met Sawbridgeworth Town
Ladies for the second time this season and it was the clarets
who were put under early pressure. It wasn’t until the 40 minute
mark that Chelmsford got a break through when captain Emma
Ridings was brought down in the area which saw her coolly
converted a penalty kick to give the home team a much needed
lift. As the first half drew to a close further efforts from
Brown and Wells also went wide and it looked as though the
clarets had gone 2 – 0 up but Emma Ridings 2nd goal
of the game was judged to be off side. With minutes left on the
clock left back Amy Vernon was brought down on the edge of the
box which presented the home side with one final chance before
the break. Sharon Brownlie struck a pin point free kick which
found incoming centre back Laura Kendle who headed the ball into
the back of the net.
It was again the away team who
came out fighting in the second half but after a few outstanding
saves from Leanne Topper the home side slowly began to get into
their stride with a number great passing moves which led to a
number of early opportunities but were all put wide. Chelmsford
didn’t have to wait too long for their third goal after a
passing exchange between Wells and Brownlie set Laura Brown free
to coolly place the ball into the back of the Sawbridgeworth
net. Brown was immediately back in action with her second goal
of the day which saw Wells become provider again with a great
run down the line and a cross into the incoming centre forward
who again managed to find the back of the net. The fourth goal
of the game saw Wells herself get on the score sheet after a
great move involving Alder and Wheeler which ended in the right
winger latching onto a cross at the far post. As the game was
drawing to end City continued to pressure the Sawbridgeworth
goal and the home team’s hard work was rewarded with a 6th
goal which saw a great move involving Brown and Ridings who set
up Wells for her second goal of the day.
Hardworking player of the match
Brown was replaced by youngster Ashleigh Harding who made an
immediate impact with her strong attacking football, Lucy
Garrett replaced Wells whilst Liz Marshall added fresh legs to
the back four when she replaced Amy Vernon. After an edgy start
the ladies went home victorious as well as keeping a clean sheet
which they hope will provide them with added confidence when
they host 2nd in the league Brentwood this Sunday.
Chelmsford City 10
v Saffron Walden Town 1
Chelmsford City Ladies achieved the same feat as their male
counterparts within the club by reaching this seasons County Cup
final after demolishing Saffron Walden Town at Marconi Leisure
on Sunday.
It was a
nervous opening period by City who fashioned out early chances
through a Laura Kendle header and a couple of Laura Brown
efforts but it was the visitors who took the lead. A long ball
forward over the City defence saw the back pass bobble up in
front of Leanne Topper and her miscued clearance fell to Town’s
Alison Wright who turned and struck a left foot shot into
the open net.
City
slowly began to look the more dominant but had to be wary of
Town’s long ball forward for the counter-attack. Topper had to
be alert to save with her left foot and her swift distribution
set up City’s leveller in the 16th minute. Brown did
well on the left before a low ball across the face of the goal
was converted by Emma Wells at the far post.
Numerous
chances were carved out by City and it was in the 33rd
minute when Helen Alder unleashed a stunning 30 yard
strike and six mins later, Emma Ridings jinxed past two
defenders before drilling a shot into the far corner for City’s
third.
Wells had
a shot turned round the post by Frost in the Town goal and on
the stroke of half time, Sharon Brownlie headed number
four following a right wing cross by Claire Pavett.
City
started the second half as they had finished the first, totally
dominating possession and confidently passing the ball around.
Ridings turned her marker for number 5 in the 57th
minute and four mins later, Wheeler’s skill in the box saw her
brought down with Ridings tucking away the resulting
penalty.
The
following minute, Ridings was on hand for City’s 7th
after the ball fell loose after Brown has chased a through ball
and number 8 soon followed. Brown showed great composure
to beat her marker and fire a shot in off the far post before
Brownlie netted the 9th on 69 mins, volleying a
corner from close range.
Brown had three great chances to extend City’s
lead further and Ridings also had a shot turned round the post
as City were rampant. Natalie Madlin had only been on for a
minute and saw an effort go inches wide and just failed to
convert a Ridings cross moments later.
In time added on, Brownlie provided the perfect
ball to Ridings who beat the offside trap, round the
keeper and stab the ball home for her 5th of the
game.
City will now meet favourites Colchester United
at Maldon Town on Sunday 16th March kick off 2pm.
This Sunday, City are back in league action when they meet
Sawbridgeworth Town at Marconi Leisure, West Hanningfield Road
2pm KO.

Brentwood Town 2 Chelmsford City 2
Was this result classed as two
points lost or a point gained? With only five minutes on the
clock, Brentwood took the lead when Town striker, Julia Brosnan
netted with a far post header from a deep cross.
Their lead lasted only five
minutes as Chelmsford capitalised on hesitation at the back and
Laura Brown reacted quickest to prod home the rebound after the
Town keeper spilled a well struck shot.
Both sides created chances as the
game maintained a high intensity and tempo throughout the first
half. City came close on numerous occasions, most notably a Town
defender having to make a goal line clearance.
At the other end, Leanne Topper,
in the City goal, made a superb save in turning a well struck
effort from the edge of the box round the post.
It was City who edged in front
just before half time when Town’s keeper could not hold a close
range header from a corner and Emma Wells was on hand to fire
home.
The second half maintained a high
tempo with the home sides strong tackles flying in which was not
dealt with by the referee. This unsettled City slightly who
struggled to get their usual passing game going.
It looked as though City had
gained all three points but Town launched a late rally and with
minutes ticking away, grabbed an equaliser, Bryony Lynch
grabbing a dramatic late equaliser.
As the game edged into injury
time Brentwood came within inches of snatching all three points
as the tireless Lynch burst into the box between two City
defenders but her shot went wide.
Chelmsford remain 13 points ahead
at the top but now have a number of injury worries ahead of this
Sundays vital County Cup semi final. A number of players are
nursing bumps a bruises but the worst is a suspected broken
wrist sustained by influential defender Zoe Taylor.

Chelmsford City Ladies v Hoddesdon Owls
5 - 0
City started play with
attacking play and within the first 6 mins a brown shot was saved
brilliantly by the keeper, and the quick legs of Pavett followed up and
fired the ball into the back of the net. City continued their attack and a
well placed Wells ball found Alder who had her shot saved by the keeper

City's second. Further efforts from Alder, Wheeler. A flying Davis heeder
from a well worked set piece was brilliantly saved by the Hoddeson keeper

gave city opportunities to push forward.

football with noticeable performances from Vernon, Pavett, Taylor and
wells linking up and working well on the wings. Also the city attackers
working tirelessly to break down the on form Hoddesdon keeper and

England make Swiss roll
England 10-1 Switzerland
World Deaf Futsal Championship
Sofia, Bulgaria
Wednesday 14 November 2007
Lisa Nepean scored a hat-trick as England moved into the Quarter Finals
following a 10-1 demolition of Switzerland.
With three wins and a walkover victory banked before
Wednesday's game, England needed to continue their perfect run to ensure
they finished as group winners.
 The Three
Lions started well and were the width of the post away from taking a
third minute lead when Esther Maycock struck the upright.
But Julie Callaghan's side did not have to wait long for their opening
goal which arrived three minutes later when Jess Everhurst tucked in a
rebound after Maycock's shot was saved.
The lead was doubled within 60 seconds, Cath Eyley firing home from 15
yards after a clever one-two with Everhurst.
Nepean scored the first of her treble in the ninth minute after Annie
Straw's looping pass caused chaos in the Swiss ranks.
Straw then got in on the act moments later as the roles were reversed,
her header from Nepean's corner putting England 4-0 up.
The avalanche of goals kept coming with Everhurst adding a fifth a
minute later.
Nepean then converted a rebound after Maycock's shot was spilled as
England pressed hard on the accelerator. Laura Wiseman then cracked home
as England reached a magnificent seven, but they were not content with
single figures.
 Sarah Page
continued the rout with a deflected strike from distance before Lydia
Docker made it 9-0 following a smart return pass from Wiseman.
It was unlikely England would be able to match their efforts after the
break but in scoring their tenth goal on 32 minutes they became the
first side to hit double figures in the tournament. It was Nepean who
grabbed the goal, sliding a shot under the keeper to complete her
hat-trick.
England conceded their first goal of the tournament a minute later but
The Three Lions responded with Maycock hitting the post three times
before the final whistle.

Cambridgeshire FA 1-1 Essex FA, Thursday 4th October 2007, Soham Town
Rangers FC, Kick-Off 7:45pm, East Anglian Counties Women’s Championship
Report
by Mark Wallis

Essex
Women’s side are off to a solid start to the new East Anglian Counties campaign
as a first half header from defender Vanessa Wilson helped earn a point for new
boss Kim Coster against Cambridgeshire.
“We’ve come along way from last year” said
boss Coster after the clash at Soham Town Rangers. “I’m very pleased for the
girls and they’ve done themselves proud tonight. There were maybe a few early
nerves, but when we settled we were excellent.”
“Maybe we could have gone on to win. We were
caught offside a few times in the second half and we could have gone two-up. We
were all a little disappointed to concede in the final 15 minutes, it would have
been nice to hold on but I’m very pleased with the result.”
Indeed, Essex where required to soak up much
early pressure from their hosts as the County looked to find their feet early
on.
The first opportunity arrived on three
minutes when Cambs’ Jodie Lapish drove over crossbar from the edge of the area
before Michelle Bridgeman did well to cling onto Alison Wright’s low shot.
Kayleigh Currie picked-up a loose ball for
the home side from a Sophis Piotrowska corner and Kerri Binks was called upon to
hack the ball off the goalline.
Dagenham & Redbridge shot-stopper Bridgeman
then did well to twice block at the feet Piotrowska before Essex calmed any
jitters by taking a 27th minute lead. A perfectly delivered Lianne
Prior corner powered home by the head of Billericay’s Wilson.
Essex could have doubled their led in
similar fashion seven minutes before the break, this time Prior’s flag kick was
bundled goalward by Wilson, but Cambs ‘keeper Verity Crook eventually managed to
gather the ball.
The second period saw Essex make all the
early running, but the best chance fell to Prior who’s angled shot brought a
fine stop from Crook after Zoe Rushen had created the opportunity.
Slightly against the run of play Cambs
grabbed a leveller on 78 minutes, Naomi Lyon sliding home a low shot from 15
yards.
Undeterred, though, Essex continued to
create chances and Prior stabbed a Marie Barker free kick just off target at the
far post before, in stoppage time, Prior curled a 20 yard free kick inches wide
of the upright.
Essex eventually settling for a draw, but
content with a fine performance and a strong base for the new campaign.

Chelmsford City V Stevenage Borough 1 - 2
Chelmsford having been unbeaten in 14 games faced Stevenage who
had a point to prove having been knocked out of the play offs by city last
season. Chelmsford started the game looking the most likely to grab the points
with a fantastic first ten minutes. Stevenage started strong and confidence
was high and just before half time they grabbed a goal after forcing a
defensive error from city's defence. Chelmsford came back out and both teams
battled hard, but a strong midfield from Stevenage and some long range balls
to the strikers and the away side grabbed another goal. City's Alder, Ridings
and Wells worked had to find the equaliser and Wheeler who was on side missed
the opportunity to header a city equaliser. City brought on fresh legs in the
shape of Jolly, Madlin and Hyland who made an impact and with 6 minutes to go
City's Wells scored a well deserved goal as she fought hard down the wing.
City continued battling to the end.
Chelmsford City would like to thank Chelmsford City Men's

Billericay Town V Chelmsford City 1 - 3
City began their first game of the season with a point to prove against newly
promoted Billericay and it was the clarets who began the game more brightly
with a strike from Alder which was calmly saved by the Billericay keeper. Two
minutes later saw he home team on the attack with a strike which was saved by
Topper. City looked to get a grip on the game with some quick passing football
while also attempting to snuff out the continued long balls put forward by the
home team. As the end of the first half closed in Alder worked hard to
pressure the Billericay defence which ended in her being fouled on the edge of
the box. Quick thinking Ridings managed to latch onto the lose ball and fired
a left footed shot over the head of the keeper and into the roof of the net.
Within the first few minutes of the second half city were
gifted two corners but failed to create any clear cut chances. As both sides
now began to play more passing football city managed to settle down and with
the introduction of some fresh legs it was the away team which looked
brighter. on the 50 minute mark it did look as though Riding's had netted
city's second goal but after a collision with the home keeper the goal was
disallowed. After some inspiring football by Davis in the middle of the park
and Wheeler down the wing the clarets were now creating chances. A brilliant
move from Vernon saw no less than four city players help to create the final
ball which fell to Alder calmly slotted the ball into the Billericay net.
Billericay were certain not dead and buried and shortly after the second city
goal it was the home team who found the back of the net as city failed to
react to a counter attack led by Lisa Robins. City were now starting to feel
the pressure and many with players now tiring after a six game tournament the
day before the home team began to find their form. With the game drawing to a
close city were awarded a direct free kick on the edge of the box after a foul
on Wheeler. Brownlie stepped up to take the kick and fired a bar splitting
effort which saw the ball striking the underneath of the crossbar before
finding it's way into the back of the net. With minutes to go the home team
continued to press the clarets and their hard work looked to have played off
with a brilliant Billericay strike, but it was the Chalmers keeper Leanne
Topper who had the last laugh with an unbelievable save which saw the game end
with a 3 - 1 city win.
Chelmsford 8 Haringey Borough 6Chelmsford

Match report by Clare Andrews
C&K BASILDON 1 CHELMSFORD CITY 9
Chelmsford started the dominant team, against their Essex
County League opponents, with early efforts from Ridings and Wheeler going wide.
City had an early Helen Alder goal ruled out for offside but the hard working
City continued to attack and their persistence soon paid off. Emma Ridings
provided a cross from the right where Alder was on hand to score with a
well taken goal.
It was not long before Basildon seized the opportunity, on
seeing the keeper off her line, to level the score. City continued to move the
ball forward well and it was not long before Kerri Binks to power the
ball from just under 30 yards, hitting the left hand post and into the net to
restore their lead.
Michelle Davis and new signing Clare Pavett, worked tirelessly
with Davis chancing a volley that beat the keeper to extend City’s lead.
City raised their game still further during the closing stages
of the half and a perfectly placed pass from Pavett found Lucy Garrett whose
ball into the box saw Ridings coolly slot home with her left foot.
Garrett was again involved in City’s 5th goal, setting up Ridings
who ran at the defence before netting with a left foot shot.
After the break City raised their game, Pavett and Garrett
both having efforts go close. City’s 6th goal came following a good
Garrett corner which was only half cleared by the keeper with Madlin on
target with the rebound, her first goal since returning back from University.
Garrett again provided a well placed ball to the lively
Madlin who turned her marker before finding the net for number 7th. Jasmine
Wheeler was running the Basildon defence ragged down the wing while Lucy Terrell
was providing some great through balls to the strikers.
Sharon Brownlie’s well taken free kick found Madlin who
completed her hat-trick before Binks completed the scoring with City’s 9th
by coolly slotting the ball home following a good move.
Chelmsford City Ladies v Haverhill
Rovers 05.08.2007
Chelmsford’s second pre season friendly saw
them dominate the first half against a strong Haverhill side. Haverhill struck
first with a well taken corner finding the head of Haverhill’s number 5. Both
teams continued the play some great football in the 30° heat with City’s main
efforts coming from the strike force of Emma Ridings and Laura Brown. City’s
defence also continued to work hard whist providing the players in front with
some perfectly placed balls. As the second half drew to a close Zoe Taylor was
unfortunate to see a well struck free kick fall to the hands of the Haverhill
keeper. Before the end of the half city found themselves 2 – 0 down with
another well worked set piece beating the keeper.
With some half
time substitutions city looked a changed team and the introduction of new
signing Claire Pavett along with the return of Natalie Madlin making an instant
impact. Laura Brown came close with an effort on goal which the keeper coolly
caught. Ridings continued with the ongoing attack after a miss kick form the
keeper saw the city forward with a clear chance on goal. Some how Haverhill’s
keeper managed to survive two close range efforts which included a ball to the
face which meant city had to wait a while longer for their goal. City continued
to control the game playing some great attacking football. On the hour Claire
Pavett hard work was rewarded with a superb 40 yard lofted shot which found its
way into the top right hand corner of the Haverhill goal. Confidence now
running high City moved onto the counter attack with Ridings picking out the run
of wheeler with a pin point pass which saw her calmly volley the ball into the
roof of the net. As the team celebrated Wheelers wonder goal they were
disappointed to see the linesman’s flag raised and the goal was cruelly called
off side. As the game drew to an end city failed to give up on getting that
second crucial goal and were unlucky not to score with an inspirational run from
centre back Michelle Davis finding substitute Cat Hyland who saw her shot go
wide. Wheeler continued the hard work with an amazing run, beating 3 defenders and
finding the back of the net with a lofted shot finding its way past the reach of
the Haverhill keeper which saw the game finish a credible 2 – 2.
Both teams showed
great determination playing in soaring temperatures on a hard pitch. City now
look forward to travelling to local side Basildon Town ladies this Sunday.
