Chelmsford City 6 Cambridge United 0
Sunday 9th November 2008, Marconi Leisure, West Hanningfield Road.
Kick Off 2.00pm. Eastern Region Women's League Cup Premier Division.
City got back to winning ways with a six goal victory on Sunday to make it 18 points from seven matches played and go level on points at the top.
City started the game strongly, dominating possession, forcing the visitors to defemd for long periods. Sharon Brownlie worked tirelessly in the centre of midfield linking up well with Michelle Davis. It was only a matter of time before City’s dominance paid off and on 7 minutes, Laura Brown held the ball up well to tee up Emma Ridings who slotted the ball home.
The on form Ridings had two further efforts go wide of the goal before Brown intelligently put in Ridings and her timely run saw her lift the ball over the keeper fro her second. Both players continued to link up well to terrorise the United back four and it was soon 3-0 when Brown’s well struck shot flew past the keeper into the net.
Leanne Topper, in the city goal, had to be alert, racing quickly out to intercept a swift ball forward and play switched to the other end, where Brown was brought down on the edge of the box. Claire Pavett stepped up to blast the free kick over the wall and into the net for City’s 4th.
Cambridge
fought back and had a shot go wide of the post while Brownlie tried her luck
with a deft lob which went close. The half ended with Georgia Wheate having a
fine effort caught well by the United keeper.
The second half saw City kicking into the strong wind and Jasmine Wheeler had
a shot on goal well saved. City continued to dominate the game but the visitors
enjoyed more of the possession that they had in the first. The chances were
still being created by City with their defence dealing with United’s
counter-attacks well. Ridings, Davis and Brown had efforts on goal before Sarah
Jolly came off the bench and nearly netted with almost her first touch.
Topper was called into action to deal with a dangerous ball forward and
her swift distribution sent Lucy Garrett down the right but her long range
effort was held by the Utd keeper.
Substitute, Helen Alder showed her skill by creating space for herself on
the edge of the box before her shot taking a deflection into the net for City’s
5th and Ridings unselfishly set up Garrett who netted with a
well taken goal to complete the scoring.
