Chelmsford City Reserves 7 Beacon Hill 1

Sunday 7th December 2008. at Marconi Leisure, West Hanningfield Road. Kick Off 2.00pm, Essex County Women's League Division Two.

City were in ‘seventh heaven’ following a superb all round disciplined performance on Sunday which saw them move up into second place in the table.

This season, City’s Essex County League side look to be one of the strongest for many years and they soon stormed into a three goal lead through Alice MacInnes, Letitia Cleary and Ashleigh Harding strikes. Their attacking prowess saw most of the game spent in the visitors half and Harding netted a fourth midway through the half.

Beacon Hill looked to try and rely on the counter-attack and their lone striker, struggled to pierce a strong looking City defence well marshalled by Katherine Clarke. As the half began to draw to a close, Beacon Hill netted what turned out to be their only goal after indecision saw their striker nip in to slot the ball into the net.

City continued to dominate before and after the break but chances came and went. Grainne Mclaughlin, in her first game back from injury, was inspirational in midfield while Harding and Cleary’s skill and speed was constantly causing problems for the visiting defence.

As the game entered the final 20 minutes, Harding completed her hat-trick with a superb 25 yard shot over the keeper and soon after, Angela Holden came off the bench to fire home number six from close range. With virtually the last kick of the game, McLaughlin’s driving run into the box saw her brought down and Hannah Magner stepped up to confidently drill the resultant penalty home.
