Bedford 1
Chelmsford City 3
Sunday 29th March 2009 at. Kick Off 2.00pm, Eastern Region Women's
League Premier Division.
With the league leaders winning, City need to keep the pressure on them which is what they did in style on Sunday against fellow title rivals Bedford.
City were looking to avenge their 5-1 home loss earlier this season and took the game to their opponents, putting them to the sword. Sarah Jolly opened the scoring for City early on after Michelle Davis had won a free kick on the edge of the Bedford box. Claire Pavett’s header from the free kick fell nicely to Jolly who gleefully tucked the ball home.
The Clarets enjoyed the cushion of a two goal lead by half time when Davis was on hand to connect with an Amy Vernon ball and slot past the keeper. Such was City’s dominance that it was a surprise the scoreline was only 2-0 at the break as City were in complete control.
Bedford rallied after the break and City’s keeper Jade Parker parried away a stinging effort while at the other end, Emma Ridings’ run on goal was halted with a good tackle by a covering defender. Bedford had a free kick from the edge of the box go inches over and another shot turned round the post but City always looked the likelier to score.
City extended their lead soon after when Ridings latched onto a pinpoint Davis ball and her clinical finish effectively sealed the points. Bedford’s keeper was being kept busy with a number of easy saves and Bedford netted a consolation goal near the end with a fine lobbed goal.
Chelmsford continued to create chances during the remainder of the match but were unable to add any further goals but this was a totally professional performance by the ‘Clarets’.
Manager Clare Andrews enthused afterwards ‘This was possibly the best performance by the team this season. The players wanted to erase the memory of the previous game against Bedford and they did it in style’.
