Chelmsford City 1 Haringey Borough 1
Friday 10th April 2009 at Marconi Leisure, West Hanningfield Road.
Kick Off 2.00pm, Eastern Region Women’s League Premier Division.
A reshuffled City side, due to injury and work commitments, had to make do with a point on Good Friday against a resurgent Haringey side.
City started well with Emma Ridings having a crisp shot just off target and then a goalmouth scramble in the visitors box saw Ridings fire wide again. City had further efforts from Sarah Jolly and Ridings while Haringey had a good effort well held by Jade Parker in the City goal.
Both teams were looking to work the ball forward on the dry, bouncy pitch and the Haringey keeper had to be alert to thwart City on a couple of occasions with good saves.
Haringey
looked to grow in confidence and were unlucky not to have taken the lead when a
fine shot from the edge of the box rattled the crossbar. Laura Brown and Helen
Alder were strong in the midfield for City and were instruemental in breaking
down a number of Haringey attacks and were also involved in a number of quality
balls forward to their strikers. Both teams continued to miss good
opportunities, the closest coming when City defender Georgia Wheate being alert
to get back and clear an effort off the line.
The second half saw Haringey start the better of the two teams, Parker out
well on at least three occasions to block efforts from the haringey forwards. It
was City who took the lead after Jasmine Wheeler won the ball on the left and
played a good ball forweard to Ridings. She skipped past two players only to see
her shot pushed away by the keeper but Jolly was on hand to follow up on
the rebound and placed the ball in the net.
Haringey continued to put pressure on the City defence and a well placed corner was palmed away for a throw by the in form Parker. The away side continued to put pressure on City and drew level when a Haringey striker turned her marker on the edge of the box and drove a low shot into the bottom corner.
This spurred
City into action and they pushed forward seeking a winner and looked to have
snatched it with five minutes remaining after Brown played a through ball to
Ridings. Her lob over the keeper saw Kayleigh Franklin beat a covering defender
to the ball but unfortunately blasted the ball over from six yards.
