Chelmsford City 1 Woodbridge Town 4
Sunday 5th April 2009 at Marconi Leisure, West Hanningfield Road. Kick Off 2.00pm, Eastern Region Women’s League Premier Division.

City started sprightly, Amy Vernon linking up well with Kayleigh Franklin whose shot was caught well by the keeper. Vernon was instrumental in a umber of City’s attacks but the Woodbridge defence looked solid. Woodbridge looked dangerous on the counter attack and a powerful shot went over the bar to spare City's blushes.

Woodbridge took the lead with their first real shot on goal by lobbing City's keeper. Town nearly doubled their lead when City's defence failed to deal with a corner and after a scramble in front of goal, the ball was cleared. It was another uncharacteristic error which saw the visitors extend their lead with a scrappy goal.

City had further chances to score at the other end, firstly from a Claire Pavett free kick and an Emma Ridings shot which went wide.

As half time approached, Woodbridge netted a third goal when a striker through on goal, rounded Topper to slide the ball home. There was a glimmer of hope minutes later when City's Zoe Taylor whipped in a corner and Michelle Davis hammered the ball home.

The second half saw Laura Brown come on and made the early chances, Pavett going close from another free kick and Sarah Jolly's header skimming the bar. Taylor whipped in another corner and a Town defender almost converted into her own net before City were denied a penalty when a Woodbridge player looked to have handled the ball in the box but their appeals were waived away.

Woodbridge broke up play during the remainder of the game, kicking the ball out of play at every opportunity, broke away to net a fourth at the end. City had further chances in the dying minutes with Ridings going wide twice and Brown charging down the wing but it was not going to be City’s day.

Chelmsford City: Topper, Taylor, Wheate, Vernon, Pavett (McLaughlin), Davis, Brownlie, Wheeler (Wells), Franklin (Brown), Jolly, Ridings.

City’s Manager Clare Andrews reflected after the game stating ‘A disappointing result for us today, I think we lacked confidence at the start and we defended badly having been consistently organised over the last few weeks. On the four occasions Woodbridge attacked they scored. But we live to fight another day and we will bounce back. I hope the supporters come and support us Friday and Sunday as we look to bounce back and secure two wins’.

Goalscorer: Michelle Davis
Referee: Peter Knott (Halstead)
