EASTERN REGION WOMEN’S FOOTBALL LEAGUE
DIVISION ONE EAST
Sunday 1st May 2005
Chelmsford City 2 – 0 Brentwood Town
ANOTHER all-round strong performance from City saw them come out on top in this fierce Essex derby, their final league fixture of the season.
The two teams looked evenly-matched from the start, but City’s central defensive pairing of Jemma Bell and Vanessa Smith combined superbly to keep the highly-rated Brentwood skipper Kerry Mills at bay.
Angelina Hadley broke the deadlock for City, after 25 minutes, as she coolly converted Vanessa Smith’s corner with a cracking volley.
Chelmsford held on to their slender lead for the remainder of the first half, and they continued to work hard after the break, with Sharon Brownlie and Hadley keeping up the pressure on the wings, Carly Waters maintained her fine form between the posts and pulled off a string of outstanding saves to preserve City’s one-goal advantage.
Hadley ensured the Clarets took all three points from this match with 15 minutes left on the clock, when she pounced on a loose ball in the area and fired pass the Brentwood keeper.
This was yet another gritty team display from the Clarets who now go into next weekend’s cup final with great determination. Despite not having a full squad due to unavailability and injury, City were relentless in their play once again, and they deservedly took all three points from their final league game of the season, to secure either sixth or seventh spot in their first season playing in the Eastern Region League.
