FA WOMEN’S CUP FIRST QUALIFYING ROUND

 Sunday 5th September 2004

 Haringey Borough 1 – 7 Chelmsford City

SUNDAY’S FA Cup tie looked to be a tricky encounter for Chelmsford as their Premier Division opponents occupy a much higher league status.

City did not have a great start, when after only four minutes, went a goal behind after a high looping ball over the top saw a Haringey forward nip in and benefited from indecision between defence and goalkeeper, Smith.

City equalised on 25 minutes after Sharon Brownlie closed the home side down, and Kerri Binks struck home an unstoppable shot.

A minute later, Emma Riding’s near post corner was headed clear only for Ridings to react sharply to send a chip to the far post where Madlin put City in front.

City extended their lead further in the 31st minute with Binks volleying the ball home from just outside the penalty box.

City have worked hard during pre-season on their fitness and this became evident during the final 20 minutes of the match.

On 84 minutes, second half substitute Lucy Terrell struck a free kick from just outside the box which took a deflection off a defender, leaving the keeper rooted to the spot as the ball went into the net.

Two minutes later, Ridings out-foxed two defenders on the half-way line before out-pacing the defence to calmly slot the ball home.

Ridings netted her second and City’s sixth goal a minute later after Binks had played the perfect ball through allowing her to use the pace to get clear before making no mistake with her shot.

Ridings completed her hat-trick just before full time following excellent work by Emma Wells whose pass to Binks caused confusion between defence and keeper where Ridings netted to complete the scoring.

This was a superb team performance especially taking into account the blazing heat and is just the tonic needed this Sundays league game at home to Norfolk side Mulbaton Belles.
