Essex County Women’s Football League
Division One
Sunday 30th March 2003
Chelmsford City 4 – 2 Saffron Walden Town
CITY, sponsored by Mercedes-Benz Direct, enjoyed a comprehensive victory over their visitors on Sunday to move above their opponents in the table
The first half was dominated by City who forced Town to defend for the majority of the half and were three goals to the good at the break through Lisa Foakes, Lucy Terrell and Emma Ridings strikes.
Ex-City winger Andrea Wright was introduced by Town at the break and her skills began to cause concern for City with her penetrating runs, But City’s skipper Elizabeth Marshall put in a number of timely interceptions at the back.
Wright scored twicw to bring Saffron Walden back into the match, but City should have had the game sewn up as they missed numerous chances during the second half.
City’s nerves were eased when Ridings followed up a blocked Lucy Garrett shot in the last ten minutes to net City’s fourth goal and secure three welcome points.
The victory also means that City now need just one point to be assured of Division One Football next season.
