Chelmsford City Ladies Football Club

Managers and Coaches: Roger Barnard

Roger Barnard has been involved with Chelmsford City since he started coaching the ladies almost 20 years ago, and he is married to one of the founder members of the club, Dawn Barnard. Roger began coaching at the club in November 1990, and he managed the First Team for ten years. He guided the club to its most successful period to date, when we won the inaugural Essex County Cup in 1995, as well as the Russell Cup. We then won the County Cup again under his guidance in 1998 and 1999. The team also gained promotion from Division Two of the Greater London Regional League to the Premier Division in successive seasons.

The club then switched to the Eastern Region League, where Roger steered the team to the runners-up spot in their first season in the Premier Division. He continued to coach the side the following season as we went on to win the title, in turn gaining promotion to the South East Combination League.

Roger managed the First Team in three of their five County Cup successes, and from 2000-2002 he managed our Reserve side. Outside of the club, he has also gained a number of honours, and he is currently running the Essex County Women's Representative Squads alongside Jan Mooney. Roger has also managed the Orminston Girls League Representative Squad and he is the Registration Secretary for the Essex County Womens League and Press & Publicity Officer for our club and also for the Essex County Girls League.

Roger was first involved in football as a young goalkeeper, and he enjoyed a distinguished career between the posts, representing the Chelmsford district as a youngster. Over the years, Roger has gained many coaching qualifications and after stepping down from managing he became a referee and Roger is now a level 4 referee. During his time with Chelmsford City Ladies, Roger has held numerous positions on the Greater London Regional Women's League, the Eastern Region Women's League and the Essex County Girls League.
