Chelmsford City 3 Hawkwell Athletic 2
Sunday 19th October 2008, Marconi Leisure, Chelmsford. Kick Off 2.30pm, Essex County Girls League Under 13 Division.

A rousing display by the City youngsters ensured their runners-up position in the seeding group and in doing so ruined Hawkwell's 100% record.

The visitors soon showed exactly why they had swept all before them with several menacing attacks, one of which saw Hannah Tomsett bravely head off the line. It was therefore slightly against the run of play when Gemma Plank's well-flighted corner picked out Jennifer Baldock whose textbook volley on the turn went in off the post after eight minutes.

Inevitably, Hawkwell quickly levelled with a well-taken goal of their own in the 16th minute. Substitute Laura Massey, with her first touch of the season following an injury, almost restored Chelmsford's lead only to be foiled by a good save.

On 28 minutes one of the goals of the season emerged and again it was Baldock, a real handful for Hawkwell throughout, who found the target. Ailish Hunt's intricate pass set her away on the right and having spotted the 'keeper off her line she lofted a sensational strike into the net from the angle of the area. With play continuing to switch from end to end it was proving to be a cracking encounter, and when Olivia Robinson latched onto Jade Harrington's quick throw seven minutes from time you could have been forgiven for thinking it was 'game over'.

A late reply from Hawkwell increased the tempo even further but Chelmsford sustained their resilience to record a memorable victory, defender Ellie Annan showing extreme calmness under pressure to earn her the 'Girl of the Match' award.
