Hawkwell Athletic 2 Chelmsford City 3
Sunday 23rd November 2008,
Ashingdon Memorial Park, Ashingdon. Kick Off
10.00am, Essex County Girls League Under 13 Division A
Chelmsford City's in-form under-13 side produced another awesome team
display to overcome the elements - and an impressive home side - to record a
superb away victory on Sunday.
Faced with the combination of snow and heavy rain plus an early kick-off, they set about their task straight from the first whistle and were rewarded after just three minutes. Karina Fox began the move with a neat pass to Leanne Miles whose peach of a ball down the right sent Jennifer Baldock through and she finished confidently. Hawkwell were soon on the attack and despite some resolute defending they managed to level on eighteen minutes, a near-post corner being smartly converted. Goalkeeper Christie Lucking then coolly dealt with two shots from distance as Hawkwell again threatened. But three minutes into the second-half City restored their lead with Baldock thumping in a penalty after Fox was sent tumbling.
Midway through the half City amazingly survived the mother of all goalmouth scrambles that saw about eight shots somehow blocked. However, it was two apiece shortly after when a deflected effort wrong-footed Lucking to set up a terrific finale. A draw would probably have been a fair reflection on proceedings but City, and in particular the all-action Baldock, weren't prepared to settle for that. Nine minutes remained when Gemma Plank's pass split the Hawkwell defence wide open and Baldock raced goalwards before completing a wonderful hat-trick, thus earning her the 'Girl of the Match' trophy. It did though take a vital last-minute save from Lucking to ensure the points came back to Chelmsford.
