Chelmsford
City 3 Island Girls 2
Sunday 5th October 2008, Marconi Leisure, Chelmsford. Kick Off
2.30pm, Essex County Girls League Under 13 Division.
A first-half double from Olivia Robinson along with
Sophie Dorrington's close-range strike gave the young Clarets a narrow but
deserved success against their visitors from Canvey Island on Sunday.
The early signs were good for Chelmsford with Ailish Hunt twice going close, before Robinson's powerful strike from just inside the area gave the 'keeper no chance in the 12th minute. But the lead lasted just three minutes as a Canvey forward charged through on goal and her fierce shot found the net.
City stuck to their task though and on 32 minutes Robinson's corner from the left was literally perfect as it sailed in at the far post. Midfielder and 'Girl of the Match' Karina Fox was cleverly orchestrating many of City's attacks and it was no surprise when a third home goal arrived. Going in search of her hat-trick, Robinson stung the 'keeper's hands with another fine effort but Dorrington was following up to convert the rebound.
The start of the second-half saw Gemma Plank just off target as Chelmsford looked to increase their advantage. However, Island Girls were in no mood to surrender the points easily, and they were rewarded for their perseverance as they scored again to keep matters in the balance. During the closing stages Plank saw a firm drive go agonisingly past the upright, which led to a tense finale before victory was duly claimed.
