Chelmsford City 5 Runwell Hospital 0

Sunday 21st September 2008, Marconi Leisure, Chelmsford. Kick Off 2pm, Essex County Girls League Under 13 Division.

Chelmsford City got their league campaign off to a flying start with a powerful display to see off a gallant Runwell side.

The young Clarets showed plenty of early promise going forward and it was no surprise when Sophie Dorrington prodded the ball over the line from Gemma Plank's corner after six minutes. And just two minutes later Dorrington latched onto Jade Murrel's precise through pass to double the lead with a crisp finish. Runwell's goal remained under siege and only the brilliance of their 'keeper saw the scoreline unchanged for a while. The chance of a hat-trick then fell to Dorrington but the visiting 'keeper was equal to her penalty.

However, moments before the interval Jade Harrington's shot was only parried and Jennifer Baldock buried the loose ball into the back of the net.

Chelmsford continued to pass the ball around in style upon the resumption and were immediately rewarded when Plank set up the ever-busy Ailish Hunt to neatly increase the advantage. Runwell briefly threatened a comeback but there was to be no way through a home defence in which skipper Hannah Tomsett, Leanne Miles and Ellie Annan remained solid. Good work from Emily Kendle also repelled several Runwell attacks, before midway through the second-half a solo run from Hunt resulted in another cool finish to seal a richly-deserved victory.

The 'Girl of the Match' trophy went to Harrington for an outstanding and versatile performance on what was her debut for the club.
