Leigh Rockets 2 Chelmsford City 2
Sunday 12th October 2008, Fairways School, Leigh-on-Sea. Kick
Off 10.30. Essex County Girls League Under 13 Division.
Another gritty display from City's under-13's earned them a worthy point
from this absorbing encounter in the Leigh sunshine on Sunday morning.
Nippy striker Ailish Hunt put in an early claim for the 'Girl of the Match' award by opening the scoring after only three minutes, her low shot from eight yards just having enough power to cross the line at the foot of the post. But two uncharacteristic defensive slips then allowed the hosts to take the lead, Leigh gratefully accepting the gifts handed to them on eight and 24 minutes. However, City were back on level terms almost immediately, courtesy of a marvellous move involving Karina Fox and Jennifer Baldock. Two quality passes freed up Olivia Robinson who showed great poise before calmly planting the ball beyond the 'keeper.
The visitors enjoyed several further attacks and it took a fine save to thwart Baldock's fierce effort. Both defences tightened up after the break, although it was City who looked the more likely winners, with Gemma Plank, Jade Murrell and Jade Harrington all going close. Overall though a draw was a fair result, and despite a smashing second-half from defender Leanne Miles it was Hunt who did indeed go home with the 'Girl of the Match' trophy.
