Assandun Vikings 2 Chelmsford City 9
Sunday 19th April 2009 at King George Playing Fields, Ashingdon Road,
Ashingdon, Rochford. Kick Off 10.30am, Essex County Girls League Division B.
Having not played for 5 weeks, a weakened City team travelled to Ashingdon to take on the Vikings in what was a must win game if they were to keep their title hopes alive. With their regular goalkeeper injured and their back up on holiday, Hannah Doherty volunteered for the job no-one ever seems to want!
City started brightly and quickly opened the scoring with Alicia Cork firing past the Vikings 'keeper. This was followed almost immediately from the restart with Shannon Jones chipping in from the edge of the box. Confidence was high with Cork and Jones adding 4 more goals, taking City in 6-0 up at the break.
The second half followed much the same pattern as the first with Cork scoring quickly before the Vikings pulled a goal back with a shot that was just out of the stand in 'keeper's reach. City replied instantly with Cork netting her 6th of the match with a well finished effort.
Assundun continued to battle and scored a second, the awkward bounce deceiving Doherty, who despite fantastic efforts to push the ball around the post, could only help it into the corner. City were not finished and Rosie Coe, came close to adding a glorious goal, dribbling past most of the opposition before being 'double teamed' on the edge of the box. City continued to push for another goal and were rewarded with a fine Shannon Matthews strike that completed a great all round performance.
