Chelmsford City 6 Island Girls 1
Sunday 8th March 2009 at Marconi Leisure, West Hanningfield Road, Chelmsford CM2 8HN. Kick Off 3.00pm, Essex County Girls League Under 14 Division 2.

After last weekends awful result against Clacton, it was vital that City got back to winning ways if they were still to be in with a shout at the Division 2 title.

Things got off to a wonderful start with Rosie Coe reacting fastest in the box to prod home a fiercely driven Inez Hockaday free kick. Hockaday doubled the lead after beating the left back and shooting home from a very tight angle. City were a bit surprised to go ahead so quickly against a side that had given them a tough match the last time they met, but they carried on pressuring and were rewarded with goal number 3, courtesy of Natasha Boyd who managed to put the final touch on a goal mouth scramble after a City corner. City were not finished yet and Hockaday scored her second after good work from Rosie Coe and Gaby Freedman put her through to finish coolly.

After the break, City had a Shannon Matthews goal disallowed after the linesman flagged the ball out of play from a corner. City then pounced on a poor Island goal kick and Hockaday completed her hat – trick, smashing the ball straight back into the bottom corner.

Island continued to work hard and were rewarded with a consolation goal that gave the City defence and keeper Chloe Pearce no chance as a thunder bolt from 20 yards screamed into the top corner. With the game dying off, City were awarded another corner and this time Shannon Matthews made sure of getting her name on the score sheet by firing home.

This was an excellent City result and outs them back in contention for the league title. Everyone of the girls was outstanding, but special mention should go to Rosie Coe and Gaby Freedman for their tireless efforts against a very physical Island midfield.
