Essex County Girls League Under-14 Division A

Sunday 7th March 2010

CHELMSFORD CITY 2 REDBRIDGE 1

at Marconi Leisure on, kick-off 1.30 pm.

Two goals in the space of sixty seconds turned this game on its head after Chelmsford had looked to be on their way to a frustrating defeat.

The Clarets' perseverance helped secure victory though, with 'Girl Of The Match' Laura Massey hugely influential for City. The hosts began well and three times top scorer Jennifer Baldock was thwarted by fine saves from the Redbridge goalkeeper. Opposite number Christie Lucking also saved in style, superbly clutching a top-corner bound shot as Redbridge grew in confidence.

On 33 minutes Lucking made a fantastic block from close range but unfortunately for her the ball fell kindly to the Redbridge striker who calmly tucked in the rebound. After the break both teams continued to create and miss chances, City skipper Gemma Plank testing the Redbridge 'keeper on several occasions.

With eleven minutes remaining Chelmsford finally grabbed the equaliser their efforts deserved. A storming run down the left took Massey into the area and she kept her cool to neatly hit the target past the advancing 'keeper. It was a goal of the highest quality and moments later a similar run ended with Massey being tripped in the penalty area, Baldock duly stepping up to bury her spot-kick into the bottom corner.

Chelmsford then had to withstand a string of dangerous Redbridge attacks, and it took the immaculate handling of Lucking and some timely interceptions by Rosanna Critchell to ensure the points stayed in Chelmsford.
