Chelmsford City 0 Writtle Minors 4

Sunday 18th October 2009 at Marconi Leisure, kick-off 2.00pm. Essex County Girls League Under-14 Division A.

A battling display from City ensured that high-flying Writtle were made to work hard for the points in an entertaining encounter. Star of the show for the Clarets was Christie Lucking who made a string of marvellous saves to keep the scoreline respectable.

However, it was Chelmsford who almost took an early lead, Sophie Dorrington’s rising shot being grabbed by the keeper at the second attempt. Writtle it was though who went in front on 13 minutes, scrambling the ball in from close range. Lucking then excelled in a one-on-one encounter before superbly tipping a fierce free-kick round the post.

Unfortunately, from the resulting corner Writtle again forced the ball over the line to give them a comfortable advantage.

Jennifer Baldock tested the Writtle ‘keeper early in the second half prior to Lucking making another notable stop from a couple of yards. City’s defensive quartet of Ellie Annan, Rosanna Critchell, Leanne Miles and Emily Kendle continued to repel a succession of attacks but the visitors made the points safe with a third goal 13 minutes from time.

This was soon followed by a miraculous one-handed save onto the post by Lucking, and despite the relentless efforts of Baldock and Jade Harrington in midfield, a fourth goal in the latter stages underlined Writtle’s superiority. But City should be very pleased and proud of their commitment to the cause and the signs are there of better results to come.
