Woodbridge Town 1 Chelmsford City 3

Sunday 14th September 2008, Notcutts Park, Woodbridge. Kick Off 2pm, Eastern Region Women's League Premier Division.

City Ladies made it two wins out of two with a well deserved victory against the Woodbridge Town at Notcutts Park on Sunday afternoon.

Woodbridge had the early chance with City’s keeper Leanne Topper saving an early Woodbridge free kick. City responded with Helen Alder who had three shots go wide of the post. City continued t battle well against a tough home side who defended well but the important breakthrough came from an early Tara Britton throw.  Laura Brown provided the perfect ball to Alder who rounded the keeper and calmly slotted the ball in the net.

City continued to have the better of the game and looked for a second which came after Brown held the ball up well in the box with Michelle Davis thumping the ball home to make it 2-0 to City. Emma Ridings had another chance just before the break following good work by Lucy Garrett but her effort went wide.

The second half saw Amy Vernon on for the hard working Britton and City won an early free kick just outside the box. Garrett’s rasping effort was palmed away by the home keeper but was alert to quickly get her feet to smother the ball under pressure.

A rare City mistake saw Town take advantage and scored a well taken goal to reduce the arrears but  City continued to look solid and almost restored their two goal advantage when Brown found herself in a one on one situation with the keeper but her shot hit the side netting. Brownlie had a shot well saved by the keeper while at the other end, Woodbridge were denied by Topper who acrobatically turned away a corner which looked set to dip in the City goal.

The inspirational Davis provided Ridings with an inch perfect ball that Ridings blasted just wide of the goal while Woodbridge had a well taken free kick saved by Topper. Georgia Wheate was on hand to deny the home side with a vital last ditch challenge on the edge of the City box as the home side went looking for an equaliser and City were to take advantage of the extra space afforded them. Vernon linked up with Davis, Alder, and Sarah Jolly who laid the ball back to Alder who fired home from 20 yards to seal all three points.

Manager Clare Andrews congratulated her team on their performance and was quick to acknowledge Woodbridge’s contribution whre both sides played excellent passing football.
